New Mexico Mother Gets Locked in Trunk, Calls 911 in a Panic; Car Found 17 Hours Later

This story is terrible!

According to a local CBS affiliate in New Mexico, a frantic woman called 911 around 7 a.m. Tuesday to report that she had been locked in the trunk of her car. Theresa Saiz-Chavez was able to tell dispatchers that a man by the name of John Hayden had locked her in the trunk of her Dodge Neon, and that she thought she was close to his apartment. Following the call, officers immediately began a grid search to find the distressed woman, marking off streets, alleys and parking lots in the area, KRQE reports. By mid-afternoon, police had questioned John Hayden twice, but he would only say that Saiz-Chavez left after an argument and that he had no idea as to her whereabouts.

KRQE said that New Mexico State Police and the Socorro County Sheriff's Department were notified around 8 p.m. on Tuesday, although this might have been too late. The search continued for another four hours until police located the vehicle just outside the city under a bridge. Theresa Saiz-Chavez was found deceased in the trunk.

Socorro police said officers did search areas outside of the city during the day. Complicating rescue efforts was the fact the woman's cell-phone battery died during the 911 call, preventing any tracking that could have been done to her location.

John Hayden was arrested late Wednesday evening and charged with kidnapping, battery and murder.

So sad! :(

  1. I wonder how many Socorro PD officers were off in the bosque on the east side of the river (well outside of city limits) looking for the marijuana and grower they busted, while this woman was locked in her trunk and being murdered right here in town, right under their noses.
Of course, the dope bust means money for SPD... even without a conviction they'll still keep any houses, cars, cash, etc they stumble across in civil asset forfeitures. You can understand why they didn't immediately hand it off to the NMSP and/or Sheriff's Dept, and also why the marijuana investigation was so much more important than preventing a murder.

    Fuck the Socorro Police Department.
